Clear as mud

Dr Baruchel is still concerned about this spot on Shania's upper leg which shows up on the MIBG scan, There was a flurry of e-mails between Neuroblastoma Doctors all over North America last week as to what this spot could be. Monday Sickkids got a new scanner called a PET scan Positron Emission Tomography. This scan is a very good tool for the Doctors to have along with the other scans to make a complete picture as to what is going on inside of people with cancer. Shania was the third person to use this new machine at Sickkids. They injected her with FDR a glucose compound with radioactive material in it, this emits x-rays which are picked up on the scan. Then on a scale from 0-6 they can to a degree tell if she has cancer cells in her body. 0 being none 3 being possible 6 being definite signs of cancer. Shania came up as a 0. Which is great for Shania, but not for the doctors, this doesn't give them an answer as to what this oval shaped spot is. Dr Baruchel wants to follow protocol and give Shania Radiation Therapy there and at the spot were Shania had her Adrenal gland removed. This can have some nasty side effects, stunted growth in that leg, infertility,ect.. This is all discouraging to Karen and I, because we thought that she was all clear and not going to need radiation therapy. We know that this Neuroblastoma is very hard to keep in remission. Shania is in partial remission because of the spot on the MIBG scan. Until they can explain what this spot is or it's completely gone, she will aways be in partial remission. On a lighter note , when Shania found out that she had to get this PET scan done, she asked if she could bring Whiskey our cat and have him do it. (by the way his name is Whiskey because he has long whiskers, not because he is a heavy drinker:)
Sincerely,
Shayne,Karen,Shania&Shannon.
